First El Salvador, then the world

Jack Mallers on stage at Bitcoin 2021
Jack Mallers broke down as he discussed working with the president of El Salvador to help bring the country out of poverty.

Like flipping a switch, the bitcoin audience went from “F-the Fed” chants to weeping as Jack Mallers, CEO of Zap, a bitcoin investment and payments company that transacts over the Lightning Network, announced through tears that Nayib Bukele, the 46th and current President of El Salvador, was advancing a bill to make bitcoin legal tender in his country.

On stage, Mallers spoke of his time in El Salvador and the poverty that he saw. Bitcoin is a solution to many of their problems, he said. We hope it is.
