It’s a long road ahead to the US election in November, something of which holders of political parody memecoins are likely all too aware.



Tokens like boden, tremp and more recently kama are a genre all to themselves. They caught fire earlier in the year, an extension of the memecoin mania that <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/solana-network-congestion-transaction-volume">largely gripped Solana</a> and Base.



“PolitiFi,” as it&#8217;s come to be known, is a catch-all term for memecoins and social tokens with a political bent. They&#8217;re usually named after a politician or pundit.



A subset of those tokens has its own nomenclature and art style — misspellings of names and rough, MS-Paint-style caricatures of their respective figures.&nbsp;

Joe Biden isn’t Joe Biden, he’s jeo boden. Donald Trump is doland tremp, and Tucker Carlson is tooker kurlson.



As for which came first, tremp and boden both launched in late February to early March. As a cohort, parody political memecoins hit close to $800 million market cap in about one month. But they’ve been bleeding out ever since, and are now worth less than $100 million overall.



When the first parodies launched, there was about 250 days until the election. Now, there&#8217;s 124 days to go, putting this particular brand of PolitiFi right at the half-way point.

Vice president Kamala Harris’ parody coin, kamala horris, is the latest to pump following Biden’s wobbly debate performance last week.

KAMA was actually launched at the end of March but only recently picked up steam, going from $1.4 million market cap before the debate to $11.4 million — 8x gains.



Still, KAMA makes up only 3% of the parody memecoin space. Boden currently holds 24% market share, down from 60% in May, while tremp has 43%, up from under 10% also in May.



(Interestingly, there doesn’t appear to be much holder overlap between parody coins. After comparing blockchain data for the different tokens, boden and tremp had the highest similarity with 12.6% of addresses holding both. Tooker and tremp’s similarity is 3.6%, while just 1% of kama and boden holders currently have both tokens.

Memecoins are super volatile and there’s no reason to suspect otherwise of these political parodies. They’ll likely go up and down ad nauseam, as is practically intended.



Although, we’re still about four months away from the US election in November. With so much room left to go, holders intent on riding out the campaigns would be wise to strap in for the long haul.

PolitiFi parodies are half-way to the US election — but it’s uphill from here

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez has dropped out of the 2024 US presidential race, making him the first Republican to quit campaigning.&nbsp;



Suarez ended his bid for the White House after spending just over two months on the campaign trail.&nbsp;



Suarez released a statement on X saying that running for the US presidency was one of the “greatest honors” of his life.



“It was a privilege to come so close to appearing on stage with the other candidates at last week’s first debate,” Suarez wrote. “While I have decided to suspend my campaign for President, my commitment to making this a better nation for every American remains.”

Suarez was perhaps the most outspoken Republican presidential candidate about crypto. <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/new-york-mayor-elect-gives-city-token-seal-of-approval">His mayoral administration was friendly to CityCoins’ first project</a>, dubbed MiamiCoin.&nbsp;



Suarez also explored giving bitcoin yield to Miami citizens who staked on MiamiCoin, which began trading in August 2021. The token has lost over 61% in value in the last year, per CoinGecko <a href="https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/miamicoin">data</a>. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has also emerged as a voice in the Republican party on crypto, though <a href="https://blockworks.co/news/desantis-pro-bitcoin-anti-cbdc">his concerns are centered squarely on the introduction of a central bank digital currency</a> (CBDC).

Ultimately, Suarez’s campaign failed to gain much traction.



As Suarez alluded to in his post, his decision to suspend his campaign came days after he mistakenly believed he had qualified for the first Republican primary debate on Aug. 23. He announced prior to the debate that he had met the Republican National Committee’s polling and fundraising requirements.&nbsp;



Nine candidates, including former president Donald Trump who didn’t appear — qualified for the debate. Suarez wasn’t one of them, and Trump continues to outstrip his opponents in public polling.

Bitcoin-friendly Miami mayor quits US presidential race

Congressional candidate Shrina Kurani is using NFTs to raise awareness for her campaign and bring attention to climate-friendly Web3 solutions.&nbsp;



Kurani, a Democrat running for a seat in California’s 41st District, teamed up with NFT (non-fungible token) marketplace Abris to launch 230 NFTs — signifying the 230 billion tons of carbon remaining in the world’s &#8220;<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s43247-020-00064-9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon budget</a>.&#8221;

Available through March, the NFTs are priced at $1,250 and $5,800. They will grant holders access to airdrops from other crypto and climate projects, conversations with climate scientists and the campaign’s Earth Day party in the metaverse.



The NFTs serve as the campaign’s “merchandise,” Kurani told Blockworks, and funds from them will be used for communications and “building a team that has run similar races before, and won.”



“When innovative ideas meet technology, fundraising becomes a memorable experience,” Abris CEO Priya Samant said in a statement.

Abris is built on Algorand, which partnered with ClimateTrade to offset its emissions and become a carbon-negative blockchain network. 



Kurani said that legislators who are literate in technology and crypto are essential to ensuring Web3 innovation. She is challenging US Rep. Ken Calvert, a Republican who has held the district seat since 2013. Other candidates include Democrat Will Rollins and Republican State Sen. Melissa Melendez.



Kurani is a vice president of business for Republic, a New York-based financial technology company with a retail investment platform, a blockchain advisory service and a private capital division. The company has deployed more than $700 million in investments and supported about 600 companies



A former mechanical engineer at NASA, Kurani in 2015 co-founded FoodNest, a Berlin-based start-up offering access to food inventory, and served as its CEO until January 2018. She later served in leadership roles at Sutro, a company focused on building water solutions, and venture capital firm Better Ventures.



Now, Kurani said, the US has a chance to invest in emerging technologies and digital services focused on transparency, efficiency and access.&nbsp;



“With crypto, we can democratize access to financial services at large and use the closely intertwined relationship between technology and ownership to streamline processes, educate the American population, and encourage financial literacy, particularly for communities who have been historically disenfranchised,” she told Blockworks.&nbsp;



In terms of crypto legislation that Kurani would support if elected, she called tax and accounting reporting frameworks “low-hanging fruit” that would benefit the industry. She would prioritize clear guidelines on know your customer (KYC) and anti-money laundering (AML) reporting while seeking to protect privacy, Kurani added.



President Biden <a href="https://cms.blockworks.co/bidens-crypto-executive-order-may-be-watershed-moment-despite-lack-of-specifics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">signed an executive order</a> last week that calls on government agencies to study potential approaches to digital assets. It focuses on consumer protection, financial stability, risk mitigation, the US’s financial leadership, financial inclusion and responsible innovation around crypto.



“The first phase of legislation begins with education and discourse, and the executive order is laying a pathway to do just that,” Kurani told Blockworks.



The NFT drop, designed to engage the crypto community to participate in the future of crypto legislation, follows <a href="https://cms.blockworks.co/andrew-yang-turns-to-dao-in-web3-lobbying-push/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Andrew Yang’s creation of Lobby3</a>, a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that intends to fund advocacy organizations to form relationships with lawmakers and educate them on Web3.



The former presidential candidate <a href="https://cms.blockworks.co/andrew-yang-we-must-avoid-politicizing-crypto-web3/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">told Blockworks in an interview last month</a> that ensuring there is sensible regulation is crucial for the industry.
