<p>With Ethereum&#8217;s anticipated transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake <a href="https://cms.blockworks.co/ethereum-activates-grey-glacier-hard-fork-merge-likely-in-september/">expected to occur</a> in a few months, Voltz protocol is offering traders a new way to speculate returns with interest rate swaps (IRS).</p>



<p>The company announced today that staked ether from Lido (stETH) and Rocket Pool (rETH) will join its growing trading pool that currently comprises Aave- and Compound-based stablecoin rates. Each pool will have a liquidity provider margin cap of $1.5 million, and the amount will gradually increase over time.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In traditional finance (TradFi), an IRS involves two counterparties that agree to exchange future interest payments with each other. Traders acknowledge that they prefer each other&#8217;s interest rates and enter a contract to switch future interest payments.&nbsp;</p>



<p>An IRS can be used to speculate, manage credit risks and hedge against losses — it is a necessary tool for many everyday financial services. Voltz aims to offer IRS services for DeFi trading, which is known to be volatile in nature.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“What interest rate swaps unlock at the most macro level is it provides an ability to transition from something that&#8217;s variable, to something that&#8217;s stable,” Simon Jones, CEO of Voltz, told Blockworks.</p>



<p>Voltz is an automated market maker (AMM) designed to simulate IRS on the blockchain, making it synthetic and adaptable to new pools and assets — this will likely allow for a wide range of financial products and trading strategies to be built on the protocol.</p>



<p>“When The Merge occurs, the rates of return a validator node generates are going to change, and that is going to translate into a change in the value of [ether],” Jones said. “What we’re doing by launching these pools is enabling people to take specific views and to start trading those market views in a synthetic way.”</p>



<p>Presently, IRS operations are limited. Other than Voltz, only a few other protocols are in the IRS space, including: Element Fi, Strips, Pendle, Tempus and Swivel, all of which are still very new to DeFi (decentralized finance).</p>



<p>For Jones, the relatively untapped market of IRS protocols serves as a great opportunity for his team to design a product that is “actually providing fundamental value.”</p>



<p>“One of the big design decisions we made was to make the protocol as composable as possible. Everything is on-chain, which enables us to be a super low-level primitive that a lot of products are built on top,” Jones said. “If you believe a portion of rates trading will go through smart contract-based markets in the future, the long-term opportunity for Voltz is to displace all of the trading activity in interest rate swaps that takes place even in traditional finance.”</p>

Interest Rate Swap Protocol Voltz Onboards Lido and Rocket Pool

<p>The latest version of an automated market maker for cryptocurrencies launched on Ethereum’s mainnet Wednesday with a host of features for liquidity providers.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Bancor AMM has dubbed the new trading platform V3, an evolution for the company that invented the automated market maker (AMM) liquidity pool concept <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/rimmaboshernitsan/2018/10/23/this-blockchain-entrepreneur-is-reimagining-value-by-putting-empathy-first/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">in 2017</a> — which Uniswap later iterated upon to become the dominant decentralized exchange protocol with <a href="https://defiprime.com/dex-volume" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">more trading volume</a> than its competitors combined.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The latest edition improves upon the prior version’s two key innovations — impermanent loss protection and single-sided liquidity provision.</p>



<p>“With regard to the functioning of the protocol, the product and the user experience, we were looking to alleviate basically all of the major pain points that we could find,” Bancor Head of Research Mark Richardson told Blockworks.</p>



<p>One of the risks of providing liquidity in a DEX, or decentralized exchange, is the change in the relative value between the tokens in a given pair — known as impermanent loss, or IL. To be profitable, a liquidity provider must earn swap fees from trades on the exchange sufficient to compensate for the IL disparity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Bancor debuted a novel IL protection feature in a previous version, but it had one major shortcoming: An LP needed to provide liquidity for at least 100 days for full protection.</p>



<p>V3 eliminates that delay, replacing it with a “cooldown period” of seven days to withdraw from a position, plus a new 0.25% withdrawal fee, but in exchange, the IL coverage kicks in immediately.</p>



<p>“Our chief economist Stefan Loesch ran a bunch of Monte Carlo simulations using 14 months of data from version 2.1 and concluded that something like a seven-day cooldown period is going to be sufficient for that,” Richardson said.</p>



<p>Single-sided liquidity — adding only one token to a pool — was a key component of earlier versions, as each pool is paired with Bancor’s native BNT token.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The problem: a limit on the amount of deposits the protocol could handle. Once a cap was reached, more BNT had to be added to a pool to open up space for additional token deposits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>That led it to become a sort of “exclusive club,” according to Richardson, stunting growth.</p>



<p>“For a DeFi protocol to unnecessarily restrict your [total value locked] is kind of shooting yourselves in the foot.”</p>



<p>As a salve, V3 introduced what the team calls “the first-ever fungible Single-Sided Pool Tokens.” Unlike normal pool tokens, these LP positions incorporate an auto-compounding feature, aimed at decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) treasuries, which allows token teams to incentivize liquidity.</p>



<p>Previously, when a new Web3 project wanted to incentivize the formation of a pool, it tended to attract so-called mercenary capital, which would farm and sell the project’s tokens, reducing the treasury’s holdings&nbsp;</p>



<p>Now, DAOs and individual decentralized finance (DeFi) users can deposit capital into a Bancor pool, and see their token incentives auto-compound. That alleviates the need to manually claim them and saves on Ethereum gas fees — transactions that power the blockchain.</p>



<p>Uniswap’s V3 lacks a way for third parties to incentivize liquidity, explaining why many teams continue to offer incentives for market makers on the older Uniswap V2, which — more than a year after Uniswap V3’s launch — remains among the top 10 DEXes by trading volume, <a href="https://www.coingecko.com/en/dex" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">according to CoinGecko</a>.</p>



<p>Also, unlike Uniswap V3, which uses non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to represent an LPs share of a pool, Bancor’s new LP tokens are easily composable in other DeFi products — for instance they might be used as collateral in <a href="https://makerdao.com/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Maker</a> to mint DAI or supplied to Aave.</p>



<p>“Uniswap V3 has a completely different philosophy and objective,” Richardson said. “It doesn’t care about continuous liquidity. It doesn’t even espouse that markets should function correctly. It’s basically just a limit order protocol — it has all the shortcomings of an order book, and that makes it very difficult for things like natural price discovery.”</p>

<p>The rise of Osmosis, a DEX built on Cosmos, has driven significant traffic to the Cosmos ecosystem while attracting $1.2 billion of total value locked (TVL).</p>



<p>The Theta upgrade, scheduled tentatively for the first quarter of 2022, is another upcoming catalyst for ATOM and the Cosmos ecosystem as a whole.</p>



<p>Cosmos&#8217; token ATOM market dominance is approaching an all-time high, currently hovering near 0.47%.</p>

<p>As previously <a href="https://cms.blockworks.co/scrt-osmo-and-atom-rally-as-cosmos-ecosystem-claims-center-stage-markets-wrap/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">covered</a> by Blockworks, <a href="https://v1.cosmos.network/intro" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cosmos</a>&nbsp;(ATOM) is an ecosystem of blockchains that can scale and interoperate with each other. Historically, blockchains have been unable to interact with one another and had minimal transaction throughput with different programming languages, making it hard to attract developers to new chains.</p>



<p>The Tie released a <a href="https://research.thetie.io/a-journey-through-the-cosmos-atom/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research article</a> on the Cosmos network in July of 2021 describing the ecosystem&#8217;s vision: &#8220;To make it easy for developers to build blockchains and break the barriers between blockchains by allowing them to transact with each other. This vision is achieved through a set of open source tools such as&nbsp;<a href="https://tendermint.com/core/">Tendermint</a>, the&nbsp;<a href="https://v1.cosmos.network/sdk">Cosmos software development kit (SDK</a>) and inter-blockchain communication (IBC), designed to let people build custom, secure, scalable and interoperable blockchain applications quickly.&#8221;</p>



<p>Cosmos is home to nearly 50 protocols representing $151.8 billion of value. Twenty-eight of these protocols are linked via IBC, a protocol designed for interoperability between arbitrary state machines, according to the project&#8217;s website.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Osmosis: The DEX of IBC</h3>



<p>Osmosis (<a href="https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/osmosis" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OSMO</a>) is an advanced automated market maker (AMM) protocol that allows developers to build customized AMMs with sovereign liquidity pools. Built using the Cosmos SDK, Osmosis utilizes IBC to enable cross-chain transactions, according to the <a href="https://docs.osmosis.zone/overview/#what-is-osmosis" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">project&#8217;s website</a>, and has driven significant traffic to the Cosmos ecosystem. </p>



<p>The protocol aims to extend the use of AMMs within the Cosmos ecosystem beyond traditional token swap-type use cases. &#8220;Through the customizability offered by Osmosis such custom-curve AMMs, dynamic adjustments of swap fees, multi-token liquidity pools, the AMM can offer decentralized formation of token fundraisers, interchain staking, options market, and more for the Cosmos ecosystem,&#8221; reads the <a href="https://docs.osmosis.zone/overview/#what-is-osmosis" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">project&#8217;s documentation</a>.</p>



<p>The Osmosis DEX has logged 1.22 million IBC transfers over the last 30 days, more than double that of Cosmos itself and nearly 10 times more than Terra, according to data from <a href="https://mapofzones.com/?period=720&amp;testnet=false&amp;tableOrderBy=totalIbcTxs&amp;tableOrderSort=desc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Map of Zones</a>.</p>



<p>Osmosis has grown to $1.2 billion of liquidity and over $100 million in daily trading volume, according to its <a href="https://info.osmosis.zone" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stats page</a>. Some of the main drivers for growth are:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Incentivized pools paying out very attractive yields to liquidity providers; the ATOM/OSMO pair currently pays out 102.29% APR according to the <a href="https://app.osmosis.zone/pools" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">application</a>;</li><li>High staking rewards on the OSMO token, currently yielding 95.1% rewards the popular <a href="https://wallet.keplr.app/#/dashboard" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Keplr wallet</a>;</li><li><a href="https://twitter.com/0xkrane/status/1478275712444416000?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Airdrops</a> for LP&#8217;s and stakers of OSMO for up-and-coming projects in the Cosmos ecosystem;</li><li>The upcoming integration of CosmWasm smart contracts and <a href="https://defitimes.io/defi-101/superfluid-staking-simply-explained/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">superfluid staking</a></li></ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Theta upgrade</h3>



<p>The Theta upgrade, scheduled tentatively for the first quarter of 2022, is another upcoming catalyst for ATOM and the Cosmos ecosystem as a whole. Highlights of the upcoming upgrade, <a href="https://hub.cosmos.network/main/roadmap/cosmos-hub-roadmap-2.0.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">per the project&#8217;s documentation</a>, include:</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">ATOM dominance</h3>



<p>ATOM is nearing all-time highs in terms of market dominance over the total cryptocurrency market. It currently accounts for 0.47% of the entire crypto market capitalization, according to data from <a href="https://www.tradingview.com/chart/5GPs0hRQ/?symbol=CRYPTOCAP%3AATOM.D" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Trading View</a>.</p>
